Norwalk Fire Chief Shawn Dickerson will step down in June.

April 10--Mayor Rob Duncan stunned Norwalk city council members Tuesday night with the news that Fire Chief Shawn Dickerson will retire by the end of June.

Dickerson, who has been chief for less than two years, is retiring for "personal reasons," Duncan added.

"Working with Chief Dickerson has been a wonderful experience," the mayor said. "He is a very bright young man and has done an excellent job.

"He worked very diligently and never gave 80 or 90 percent, but always gave 110 percent," Duncan said.

Duncan said Dickerson worked hard to obtain muchneeded equipment at the fire department and brought the training up to speed. "We're very sad to see him go," he added.

"When he was hired as chief, he had no intention of leaving in two years," the m a y o r said.

T h e city now w i l l begin the c i v i l s e r v i c e p r o c e s s of finding a n e w c h i e f , which could take three to four months.

Councilman Bob Carleton, who chairs council's safety committee, is in charge of naming a citizen representative for the chief selection committee.

Carleton said any interested citizen can contact him.
