The elderly shooter has been hospitalized for a mental evaluation.

A California firefighter was injured by gunfire that erupted as he and others were trying to help a patient, who is now getting a mental evaluation.

The Berkeley firefighter, was released after being treated at the scene by colleagues, according to ABC7Local.

Details of the Monday morning incident were still unfolding, but the 88-year-old shooter was taken to a hospital for a psychological evaluation.

"Our firefighters respond to medical calls every day, and to walk into a home where you're essentially trying to help somebody and not know what might be waiting for you can be unnerving. In this situation, we're grateful it wasn't much worse," Jennifer Coats of the Berkeley Police Department, told reporters.
