Dudley - Firefighters battled a pesky two-alarm fire at 3 Cross St. Thursday afternoon.

Fire was coming from four sides of the Cape-style home when firefighters arrived about 1 p.m., according to Fire Chief Dean Kochanowski.

No one was home at the time.

"It looks at this point that it started from a pantry area on the first floor and went up the pipe chase," Chief Kochanowski said.

The chief said battling the fire was difficult because the fire made its way into the walls of the house.

"We had to pull a lot of walls down, a lot of hard labor," he said.

A firefighter suffered a minor ankle injury and another firefighter suffered a minor heat-related injury, Chief Kochanowski said.

Both firefighters were taken to Hubbard Regional Hospital to be checked.

Webster, Southbridge, Auburn, Douglas and Charlton fire departments assisted at the scene, while the Quinebaug Fire Department covered Dudley's station, Chief Kochanowski said.

"We called in a lot of mutual aid communities," Chief Kochanowski said. "It's warm today. So you have to keep rotating crews out every 15 minutes."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The fire displaced two adults and six children, according to the American Red Cross.

They were able to find their own accommodation, while the Red Cross provided them with food and clothing.
