Burlington Platoon Chief Ross Monteith has been promoted to deputy chief.

The Burlington Fire Department has a new deputy chief.

Platoon Chief Ross Monteith has been promoted to the second-in-command position.

He will replace Dave Beatty as of June 3. Beatty retired from his deputy chief position in May after 36 years with the Burlington Fire Department.

The city's other current deputy fire chief is Jeff Weber.

Burlington's fire chief is Tony Bavota, recently promoted from deputy chief.

Monteith will be responsible for fire operations, training and volunteers while Weber will oversee fire prevention, mechanics and communication.

"Ross has served the Burlington Fire Department in a variety of capacities, including as an instructor. I am confident he is a very good choice to fill the vacant position of deputy fire chief," Chief Bavota said in a press release.

Monteith began with the Burlington Fire Department in 1983 as a volunteer firefighter. In 1987, he was hired as a full-time firefighter. He was promoted to captain in 2000 and became a platoon chief in 2010.

Monteith has a company officer diploma and trainer facilitator certificate from the Ontario Fire College. He has also taken related courses through the Ontario Fire Marshal's office, Lambton College and Mohawk College.

The Burlington Fire Department provides service to more than 175,000 residents in a combined urban and rural area covering 189 square kilometres.

The department has 203 full-time staff and 65 volunteers. Its services include fire suppression, fire prevention, public education, training and emergency planning.
