May 31, 2013
Using night vision goggles, the pilot of the Howard County Police helicopter managed to put his ship down on the athletic field of Wild Lake High School.

A helicopter pilot’s skills were put to the test in Maryland Thursday night when the ship experienced a mechanical issue.

The tail rotor of the chopper was damaged in the landing at an athletic field at a county high school, according to WJZ.com.

Aboard the helicotper were the pilot, a tactical flight officer, and a flight officer in-training, all from Howard County Police; and a tactical flight officer from Anne Arundel County, which shares the chopper with Howard County, the station reported.

“This really a situation where our pilot is to be credited for doing what was necessary to ensure the safety of not only himself but his entire crew, and we’re all relieved to know they walked away without injury,” said Howard County Police spokeswoman Sherry Llewellyn.
