Warren firefighters acted quickly to make the rescue from the burning house.

June 27--Warren firefighters rescued a 47-year-old man early today after he was forced onto a roof of his home by smoke and fire.

The fire was reported at 1:36 a.m. in the home in the 3000 block of 13 Mile Road, Warren Fire Commissioner Wilburt McAdams said. McAdams said the fire was on the ground floor, and the resident was sleeping upstairs.

"He awoke to smoke in his bedroom and attempted to exit through the stairwell to the first floor," McAdams said. "He was driven back by heavy smoke and managed to get to his bedroom window and out to a landing."

Engine 6 firefighters quickly set up a ladder to the roof over the porch and helped the man down. Personnel from Squad 3 administered oxygen to the man, who suffered heavy smoke inhalation, McAdams said. He was transported to an area hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, the fire commissioner added.

Rescuing the man is something that will stick with the 14 Warren firefighters at the scene, McAdams said.

"It's an overall satisfaction of helping others, doing what other people wouldn't or couldn't do," McAdams said. "It doesn't happen often. But when it does, it stays with you the rest of your career and your life."
