A Sheboygan apartment fire damaged 10 units and caused rib injuries to a Kohler firefighter.

July 08--Fire investigators are working to confirm the cause of an early Monday fire at a Sheboygan apartment building that likely was sparked by an electrical problem.

The fire broke out about 2 a.m. in the attic above one of the apartment units. The building has two floors and 10 units, said Ken Molitor, Sheboygan Fire Department incident commander.

Crews from Kohler and Cedar Grove assisted Sheboygan firefighters, while the Town of Wilson also provided equipment.

A Kohler firefighter injured a rib when he stepped off a rafter and into the ceiling, Molitor said. The firefighter was treated by Sheboygan paramedics and declined to be taken by ambulance for further treatment.

Firefighters continued working at the apartment well into the morning. A damage estimate wasn't available yet, but Molitor said about half of the building has extensive damage to the ceiling and wall.

Although the fire was above the units, crews had to cut through the ceiling and pull insulation out from walls to extinguish the blaze. The building is no longer habitable. The Red Cross is assisting two families.
