At least five were hurt in the wreck in Gainesville.

July 12--Three people are dead and at least five more are injured following a five-car accident with an overturned tractor trailer early Friday morning outside Gainesville, police said.

Around 1 a.m., police received the call of the multi-vehicle wreck on northbound Georgia Highway 365 at Howard Road, Gainesville Police Cpl. Kevin Holbrook told 95.5 FM WSB News/Talk Radio.

"The tractor trailer is entangled with a number of vehicles," Holbrook said. "We transported at least five patients from that scene."

Those patients are in serious to critical condition, he said.

Authorities have not yet identified the accident victims.

All lanes were blocked on the roadway that leads from I-985, just outside the downtown Gainesville area until around 10 a.m., according to WSB Radio.

Holbrook said firefighters had to clean up oil and fuel that spilled from the overturned tractor trailer before crews could remove the other vehicles and upright the big rig.

"It is a very large, extensive accident scene," he said. "We are still trying to determine what caused accident as well as make access."
