Pa. Fire Police Officer's Car Struck at Crash Scene

A York fire police officer was uninjured when a vehicle struck his car while he was directing traffic at the scene of another wreck.

July 13--YORK, Pa. -- Fire Policeman Budd Lookingbill was directing traffic at the intersection of Roosevelt Avenue and Poplars Road Friday evening when a car crested a hill, slid off the road, and struck his vehicle.

"I was glad it was just my car," Lookingbill said a short time later. "It's a dangerous job."

Lookingbill, with the Alert Fire Company in Emigsville, was directing traffic because of another crash on Roosevelt Avenue at the time.

A total of four crashes happened on Roosevelt Avenue within about 1 { hours Friday evening, West Manchester Township Police Officer Michael Jordan said.

The driver of the Nissan Altima that struck Lookingbill's vehicle will be cited with driving a vehicle at an unsafe speed, Jordan said.

"He was just going too fast for conditions," Jordan said.

Police did not release the name of the driver, who is from out-of-state and staying with a relative.

Lookingbill, who had cones up and was directing drivers from southbound Roosevelt Avenue onto Poplars Road, said he yelled for the driver to stop.

But the car crossed the intersection and struck Lookingbill's Toyota Rav 4, which was parked off the road, police said.

No one was injured. Both vehicles could be driven from the scene.

Officials were lacking resources at the scene so flares had not been set up yet on the crest at the time of the crash, police said.

"I'm a little shook up," said

Lookingbill, who has been a fire policeman since 1978.
