A tactical response vehicle is now in service with the Plymouth volunteer firefighters who share the surplus Humvee with the police department.

Aug. 02--PLYMOUTH -- It's called the TRV 47.

The Tactical Response Vehicle was put into service this week by the Plymouth Volunteer Fire Dept. and the Plymouth Police Dept. Together, the two will share a Humvee that will serve many purposes.

For the fire department, it is hooked up with four valves -- two in the front and four in the back -- to fight field fires.

For the police department, a vehicle like this can be used for just about anything. "It just gives us a real advantage (fighting field fires ) , " said Chris Kelbley, president of the local firefighters association. "It lets us go places we otherwise wouldn't be able to go."

Plymouth got the used Humvee free from the government in a surplus auction. By kicking in about $10,000, the village got a vehicle it otherwise would not be able to afford.

Gorman-Rupp Pumps donated a couple of pumps to the project, which saved the village thousands of dollars.

"It was something we wanted to do," said Tony M. Chirico, central-eastern district manager for Gorman-Rupp. "This is something that will really benefit the community."

The village will unveil its new vehicle at this weekend's festival, set for today and Saturday.

Chicken will start coming off the grill at noon today. The 54-team mud volleyball tournament starts at 4 p.m. and there will be a live band playing from 8 p.m. until midnight.

Mud volleyball resumes at 8 a.m. Saturday, followed by a 5-K run at 9 with registration beginning at 7:45. A poker run will begin at 10. There will be more live music from 8 p.m. to midnight to wrap up festivities.
