Aug. 04--A 49-year-old Brighton mother is under arrest, charged with arson of a multi-unit dwelling and attempting to murder her daughter and a young man by trapping them in the family's apartment early this morning, fire officials said.
Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald said Lisa Brown will be arraigned tomorrow in Brighton District Court, and could be facing additional charges.
Brown "was not present when firefighters arrived" at 905 Jette Court, part of the Boston Housing Authority's Fidelis Way complex, just after 4:20 a.m., but was there when they returned to continue their investigation, MacDonald said.
When firefighters responded to the one-alarm blaze at the three-story brick apartment building there was smoke showing, MacDonald said. "What they had was a fire in the hallway of the third floor."
MacDonald said a fire started from "general items" had been lit outside an apartment door. The 21-year-old daughter and her 21-year-old male friend could not get out.
"Firefighters from Ladder 14 ended up taking (them) down a ladder," MacDonald said. "They were treated for a smoke inhalation. A firefighter also suffered a neck injury. They got the fire out pretty quickly. The sprinker system activated."
Damages are estimated at $25,000, he said.
"At 4:30 in the morning, people are in bed sleeping. It's obviously a very dangerous situation," MacDonald said. "The investigators did a great job doing quick work of this."
