Search for Missing Firefighter in N.M. Continues

Sept. 2, 2013
The missing firefighter was one of three who went out on ATVs to assess the size of a wildfire.

Sept. 01--New Mexico State Police and search-and-rescue crews are scouring the Jemez Mountains in hopes of finding a firefighter missing since Friday afternoon.

Three firefighters on all-terrain vehicles headed out to assess the size of a wildfire that ignited in the Jemez Ranger District on Friday. An hour later, just two of them returned to the meeting point by mid afternoon.

That prompted a massive search from ranger district personnel, followed by search and rescue and finally State Police. The search continued throughout the night and all day today. As of 10:15 p.m. today, the man hadn't been found.

Crews had the use of dogs, helicopters and infrared cameras. The search will continue Sunday.
