Fire Damages Tenn. Building; Cause Sought

The Madisonville building was being remodeled.

Sept. 16--Fire investigators are trying to determine what caused an overnight fire that gutted an unoccupied commercial building in downtown Madisonville.

"They haven't found anything yet as to what the specific cause was," Mayor Glenn Moser said Monday morning after speaking with firefighters.

Until recently, the building, located in the 400 block of College Street, had housed law offices, and previously a restaurant. It had recently been purchased by a new owner, and was being remodeled in anticipation of housing some new businesses, the mayor said.

"It's pretty much gutted," he said. "I was by the building just a little while ago, and there was still some smoldering going on."

The fire was reported shortly after midnight. Several area fire departments were called in to contain the blaze.

More details as they develop online and in Tuesday's News Sentinel.
