Sept. 25--LEE -- A former firefighter accused of setting his last known residence ablaze in July was indicted at Strafford County Superior Court by a grand jury Thursday, Sept. 19.
Donald Dubbs, 59, of 23 Belle Lane, who was a veteran firefighter for the Newmarket Fire Department, was arrested by U.S. Marshals and an Erie County detective in Pennsylvania on July 11 after he was featured as the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force "Fugitive of the Week."
Dubbs was being discharged from a hospital for an unknown medical problem at the time.
Police claim Dubbs set a fire on or in a detached garage and an occupied structure on July 1 in Lee. The two-alarm fire did extensive damage to the property and an elderly woman narrowly escaped from the main residence with her life.
She was removed from the home with assistance from neighbors.
Nobody was injured in the blaze.
Attempts to reach the attorney handling the case at the Strafford County Attorney's office were unsuccessful because the lawyer handling the case was out for the day.
