Oct. 12--ST. CHARLES --A firefighter was injured battling a blaze in a 10-unit apartment complex Friday night.

The name of the firefighter, a captain, and the details of his injury were not released. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital where he was listed in stable condition Saturday. St. Charles Fire Capt. Dan Casey said the firefighter is expected to be released by Monday.

The fire broke out about 9:40 p.m. in the 4900 block of Sun Lake Drive. When firefighters arrived there was heavy fire in an apartment unit on the second floor where three men escaped without injuries. Three cats died, Casey said.

The fire started in the kitchen area and spread causing the entire building to be evacuated, he said. Of the 10 units, three sustained smoke or water damage and only one had fire damage, he said.
