Oct. 14--A Havelock Burger King closed for several hours during lunch on Monday after an employee got his hand stuck in a floor drain.
The Havelock Fire and Rescue Department responded shortly after 11 a.m. to the restaurant at 102 East Main St. Fire Chief Rick Zaccardelli said crews needed about 30 minutes to free the worker's arm from the drain.
The worker, whose name was not released, was alert and walked out of the back of the restaurant to an awaiting ambulance for transport to CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern. His condition was not available.
Zaccardelli said the worker was on his knees on the floor of the restaurant kitchen when rescue personnel arrived. The drain was located underneath a food preparation table, which hampered efforts to free the worker's right arm.
Zaccardelli said that rescue personnel used air bags to raise the table off the floor to free the worker.
A manager at the restaurant refused to comment on the incident or identify the worker.
The restaurant reopened later in the afternoon.
