Oct. 26--LAYTON -- A missing hiker was found safe after an overnight search by rescue crews.
The 52-year-old Kaysville man went hiking by himself on the Great Western Trail to Layton Peak on Friday evening. His family last heard from him at 5 p.m. and at 11 p.m. they called police after he no longer made contact, Davis County Sheriff's Deputy Jamie Embley said.
The family told rescue crews that he was appropriately clothed and had food with him, Embley said. Rescuers searched the area with assistance from the University of Utah's AirMed helicopter.
He was located on the trail at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. He was examined by medical workers and was reported uninjured and in good condition, Embley said.
This is the second time this year that the search and rescue crews were called to locate the same hiker on the same trail, Embley said.
The man was unable to make the climb down the trail because it was too advanced for the man's physical capabilities, Embley said. He described the trail as steep and technical.
Embly said anyone attempting strenuous hikes like Layton Peak should not hike alone or should take a GPS locator to alert authorities to their location.
