Nov. 02--A team effort by day care staff and first responders saved a 3-year-old boy's life Friday morning after he collapsed and stopped breathing while playing with other children at Palouse Hills Day School on Tomer Road in Moscow.
Moscow Police Chief David Duke said day care employees immediately began CPR after another child alerted them and medics took over when they arrived. Using CPR and one shock from a defibrillator, medics were able to get the boy breathing on his own with a regular heartbeat.
The boy was stabilized and transported to Gritman Medical Center before being flown to Spokane. Duke said it is unknown at this time what caused the boy to stop breathing.
While Duke didn't have an update on the boy's condition by press time Friday, he said the boy had enough energy to attempt to fight off medics as they tried to ventilate him in the ambulance transporting him to Gritman.
"He was screaming, so that was a good sign ... he did not want something stuck up his nose," Duke said.
Duke said Andrew Becker, a volunteer with the Moscow Volunteer Fire Department, arrived on scene first and did so in his personal vehicle. He said Becker took over CPR from the day care staff and was joined less than a minute later by Cpl. Lindsay McIntosh and Officer Shane Gunderson, both of the Moscow Police Department. A Moscow VFD engine later arrived, along with Latah County Sheriff's Department officers.
