Nov. 03--Maui firefighters from three stations battled a tire fire at the HC&S Sugar Mill in Puunene for more than 2 hours before bringing it under control Saturday night.

Firefighters from Kahului, Wailuku and Wailea responded to the 5:15 p.m. alarm and found an area about 200 feet by 200 feet, containing about 200 heavy equipment tires burning in a tire pit in the back of the mill off Hansen Road, a Maui Fire Department spokesman said.

Firefighters surrounded the fire and brought it under control at about 9:50 p.m.

The fire did not threaten other parts of the mill and the tires, considered scrap, had no monetary value, the Fire Department said.

The cause of the fire is undetermined.
