Nov. 11--REDWOOD CITY -- A health advisory urging residents of three counties to shelter in place was lifted Monday after firefighters extinguished a fire at a metal recycling plant in Redwood City that sent smoke across much of the Bay Area overnight.

The fire began deep in a pile of metal scraps at the Sims Metal Management yard near the Port of Redwood City about 1 p.m. Sunday. More than 50 firefighters battled the blaze before putting it out shortly after 7 a.m. Monday.

"It's out to the point where we can leave," said Redwood City Fire Marshal Jim Palisi. He said the company was equipped to monitor the site for any flare-ups.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known. No injuries were reported.

The plume of smoke from the fire on Seaport Road was visible for miles. Residents of Santa Clara County and southern San Mateo and Alameda counties were advised to stay indoors overnight with their windows shut.

Some Peninsula residents reported smoky air and a foul odor Monday, but fire officials said the shelter-in-place precaution was no longer necessary.
