Nov. 21--OMAK -- A fire in the electrical room of the Omak Elks Lodge early Wednesday morning caused significant smoke damage, according to Omak Fire Chief Kevin Bowling.

But firefighters from Omak and Okanogan were largely able to prevent the blaze, reported at 4:30 a.m., from reaching main portions of the large building at 110 S. Ash St.

Bowling said the 14-foot by 20-foot electrical room filled with electrical panels was destroyed, and fire did creep into a portion of the main building. The two-story structure is at least 10,000 square feet, he said. It was mostly smoke that damaged the building's food elevator and parts of the basement and main floor.

Bowling said the cause of the fire is under investigation by both the fire department and an insurance company.

He said the fire does not appear suspicious.
