Nov. 30--ST. LOUIS --Firefighters rescued a 3-year-old girl from a house fire in north St. Louis on Saturday afternoon.
The young girl was trapped by flames on the second floor of a two-story brick home in the 5700 block of Theodore Avenue, said St. Louis Fire Capt. Dan Sutter. Firefighters pulled her from the building just after 12 p.m. The girl was taken to a local hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.
Two adults and five children managed to escape the house in the Walnut Park East neighborhood before firefighters arrived, Sutter said. The adults were taken to a hospital, where they were listed in stable condition.
The cause of the fire had not been determined.
Sutter said it appeared that the home did not have any smoke alarms.
Earlier in the day, firefighters went door-to-door giving out smoke alarms after a fire Tuesday that claimed the life of 14-month-old Antuan Carson in the 4000 block of North 25th Street in Hyde Park.
Any St. Louis resident who needs a smoke alarm can get one free by calling the fire department at 314-533-3406 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. "We know having working smoking alarms in your home will double your chances of survival" in a fire, Sutter said.
