Dec. 10--SAN DIMAS -- Two teen boys who escaped from McKinley Children's Center were rescued by Los Angeles County firefighters and sheriff's deputies Monday night after one became trapped in a canyon.

The 15 and 16-year-old boys left the San Dimas center wearing only shorts and T-shirts and headed for Walnut Creek, a nearby canyon. The boys somehow obtained some alcohol, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Andy Berg.

One of the boys tumbled off a dark trail in the canyon, suffering injuries. When he began calling out for help, someone heard him at 7:45 p.m. and dialed 9-1-1.

Officers in an El Monte Police Department helicopter equipped with thermal imaging spotted the trapped boy. Los Angeles County firefighters hoisted him out of the canyon.

Personnel walked the other boy out of the area to safety.

Both were taken to Los Angeles County USC Medical Center for treatment of exposure to the cold weather. The boy who fell was also treated for injuries, Berg said.
