Dec. 13--The Morgantown Police Department is investigating an allegation that city firefighters have viewed pornography on computers at the Northside Fire Station while on duty.
The allegation came in the form of a letter to Morgantown Fire Chief Mark Caravasos, a copy of which was provided to The Dominion Post. The letter says that firefighters share porn sites from time to time at the firehouse. They do it, at times, to break the boredom during shifts.
Caravasos acknowledged the investigation but said he could not comment because it is an active police matter; however, he acknowledged the letter.
Officials could not comment on details, including whether the investigation extends beyond Northside or whether the allegation is true.
Officials said public computers are monitored for access to unauthorized sites, so if this occurred, it would be done on private devices brought into the public facilities.
MPD 1st Sgt. R.L. Gilmore said he could not estimate the duration of the investigation -- it will depend on its scope and how many people are interviewed. The results will be delivered to City Manager Jeff Mikorski.
Mikorski said he is aware of the investigation. The city is looking into how to better filter its Wi-Fi connections.
Caravasos said that consequences, if any, will depend on what the investigation reveals. Personnel matters would remain confidential, but all responses will conform to city and department policies and procedures, including those regarding the use of computers.
Caravasos directed The Dominion Post to obtain copies of the policies and procedures via a Freedom of Information Act request, which was submitted Thursday.
