Dec. 14--GREENE COUNTY -- An overnight house fire in Greene County has claimed the life of a two-year-old child, Greene County Emergency Management Director Trent Robertson said Friday.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the home on Old Avera Road just outside of the Leakesville City Limits about 2 a.m. Friday.

Robertson said the two-year-old child was trapped inside when responders arrived. The father suffered unspecified injuries, was treated at Greene County Hospital before being transferred to the University of South Alabama Burn Center in Mobile.

Robertson said the mother and two other children escaped the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by local firefighters with assistance from the Mississippi State Fire Marshal's Office. Robertson said the cause was accidental.

Fire departments from Leakesville, Jonathan, Neely, Mt. Pisgah and South Mississippi Correctional Institution responded to the fire, as did the Greene County Sheriff Department and Greene Count Emergency Management.

Names of the family are not being released.
