N.C. Department Loses Assistant Chief

A North Carolina fire department honored one of its own Saturday.

Youngsville Assistant Chief Jeffrey Fields, 51, died at his home on Christmas morning.

On Dec. 12, Fields responded with his department to a vehicle collision.

The following morning, he was transported to Wake Medical Center where he remained for more than a week.

Fields, a former U.S. Marine, had been with the fire department for 30 years.

Funeral services for Fields were held on Saturday.

The USFA reported there have been 101 firefighters killed on duty in 2013.
