Jan. 01--KNOXVILLE -- The Knoxville Fire Department captain who suffered a heart attack while fighting a house fire was in critical condition this afternoon in the coronary vascular intensive care unit at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, according to fire officials.

Capt. Mark Lacey is a 20-year department veteran.

The New Year's Eve fire was reported about 9:47 p.m. at 5508 Dandyline Drive by a resident, according to KFD Capt. D.J. Corcoran.

Firefighters found heavy smoke and fire showing when they arrived, Corcoran said, and all of the home's residents were safely outside.

Initially, firefighters made an aggressive attack on the fire but pulled back to a defensive mode when the fire worsened, Corcoran said.

More details as they develop online and in Thursday's News Sentinel.
