It was a close call for residents and firefighters in St. Louis on Wednesday afternoon.

With gas meters reading extremely high levels after a construction crew hit a line, firefighters immediately evacuated 11 people.

Within seconds after they left, an explosion occurred blowing windows and other debris across the street, the St. Louis Fire Department said in a statement.

The two-alarm fire burned for a while before the gas could be shut off.

Chief Dennis Jenkerson said AT&T contractors were working in the building that housed the Stars Design Group.
