Heavy Snow Damages W.Va. Firehouse

Feb. 24, 2014
All units have been moved from the Jumping Branch-Nimitz fire station to another station.

Feb. 23--An official with the Jumping Branch-Nimitz Volunteer Fire Department said their station suffered some structural damage because of the recent heavy snows.

"The department is still answering calls with the help of a sister station, which is the Summers County Volunteer Fire Department, who is also helping to house trucks," President and CEO Michael Cooper said. "This is due to the fact that we thought it would be prudent because of the damage and the sagging of the roof and so forth.

"It didn't sag a whole lot, but the damage to the structure beneath the roof made us think it would be prudent to move everything out and not take the chance that there was more damage than what we were actually qualified to quantify."

Cooper says they will know the full amount of damage within a few days.

"We have claims adjusters coming within a few days to make an assessment and go from there. We're just taking the proper steps that we're supposed to be taking. The chief and I decided to err on the side of caution."
