Feb. 28--Turlock -- A 65-pound German shepherd that climbed nearly 20 feet down a ladder that descends into a cement shaft at the Waste Quality Control Facility in Turlock was rescued by firefighters early Thursday morning.

The Turlock Fire Department was dispatched to the facility at 901. S. Walnut St. just before midnight Wednesday after an employee heard the dog barking and called police, according to Capt. Sean Walker.

The shaft down which the dog had fallen was in a construction area. A ladder for workers led to the bottom of the shaft, which sat on top of a 54-inch sewer line.

Firefighters from Turlock's Engine 32 lowered and secured a harness on the dog and hoisted it to safety. The rescue took about an hour. "The dog was evaluated on scene and appeared to be uninjured and happy to be out of the hole," Walker said in a press release.

The dog was taken to the nearby animal hospital. Firefighters named her Tyler in honer of 6-year-old Rhode Island boy Tyler Seddon, who is suffering from leukemia.

Seddon is fascinated by first responders, Walker said. How the dog got in the hole and where it came from is under investigation.
