Man Rescued from Island Near Virginia

The man was stranded by high water on Rugged Island.

March 17--ISLE OF WIGHT -- A 33-year-old man was rescued early Monday morning after becoming stranded in rising water while camping on Ragged Island near Carrollton.

Isle of Wight emergency dispatchers received a call from the man who awoke to rising waters near Ragged Island Creek, according to a U.S. Coast Guard 5th District news release. The Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department dispatched a boat crew, but were unable to rescue the man because of his location and the weather conditions, the news release said.

At about 1:30 a.m., firefighters requested helicopter assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard.

Crews from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C. arrived at about 3:30 a.m. and were able to airlift the man from island by helicopter, the news release said.

The helicopter landed nearby and the man was taken by ambulance to Riverside Regional Medial Center in Newport News. As of about 9:30 a.m. Monday, the man was in good condition.
