The order to leave came when officers noticed a collapse was coming.

March 27--ROY -- Firefighters evacuated a large Roy condominium complex Wednesday morning after a fire broke out on a deck of one of the units and quickly spread.

Firefighters on the scene said the blaze began around 8 a.m. on the deck of a second-story unit at Kentwood Condos located at 2779 W. 5525 South.

Trevor Henderson, who lives on the second floor adjacent to the involved condo, was one of the first to realize the building was on fire.

"I heard some crackling sounds that at first I thought was the rain, then I heard some lady screaming," Henderson said. "I ran out and saw her on the phone probably talking to 911, then I saw the deck completely on fire."

Flames from the second floor deck, made their way to the third floor deck, engulfing both units.

When firefighters arrived the apartment was completely engulfed with flames beginning to spread to the attic. Rescue crews briefly entered to make sure there were no residents trapped inside, but also evacuated when it was evident the roof would collapse.

Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Comeau confirmed that all residents had evacuated including the occupants of the affected units. One firefighter received a minor injury.

Firefighters are still investigating how the fire started.

Henderson said one the residents may have had a fire basin on their deck.

The fire was contained by 9:30 a.m. Crews were combing through six heavily damaged units to ensure no other people were involved.

Three units were directly damaged by fire, while the other three had extensive water and smoke damage. An estimate for damage was not immediately available.

The Red Cross was dispatched to assist residents who were in need of shelter.

No other buildings in the complex were affected and those residents were allowed to return to their homes.
