Wind Whips Flames, Reminders in Boston

"Anytime I get a call for a fire in Boston, it will be different for me forever," the mayor said.

Editor's note -- Area children applauded the firefighters for their efforts.

April 10--Mayor Martin J. Walsh, arriving on the scene of last night's Eastie house fire, said it was eerily similar to last month's fatal Back Bay blaze -- a two-alarm call that quickly escalated into eight alarms, as winds whipped through the streets.

Hearing it on the radio, Walsh said he made the call to rush over to the city's first fire of this size since the inferno that killed Lt. Edward J. Walsh Jr. and firefighter Michael R. Kennedy two weeks ago.

"Anytime I get a call for a fire in Boston, it will be different for me forever," Walsh said outside Sacred Heart Parish, where displaced families huddled. "I know for the firefighters it's still fresh. ... Not even a week yet they buried two brothers.

"Unfortunately, people did lose their homes," he said. "But homes can be replaced. Lives can't be."
