April 18--A 45-year-old woman and her granddaughter were rescued by Olive Branch police officers after their van went into the lake in the Maywood subdivision.

It happened just after 10 p.m. Thursday, and everyone involved is expected to recover.

According to Olive Branch Police Chief Don Gammage, the woman lost control of her van and it ended up in the lake in the community off Miss. 178.

Police were called to the scene and officers William Brock and Julia Humble swam out about 50 yards to rescue the woman and the child as the van started to sink.

They were pulled to safety by the officers. The woman, whose name has not been released, was taken to the Methodist Hospital in Olive Branch. The girl was taken to LeBonheur Children's Medical Center in Memphis.

Both officers were also admitted to Methodist for observation after the rescue.

Divers from DeSoto County Search and Rescue also assisted police and were still working late Thursday to recover the van. It was completely submerged in the lake.

Gammage said he was proud of his officers for saving two lives.

"I think they did some heroic acts," he said. "We preach that every day to protect and serve."

He said the incident remains under investigation.
