April 18--You can call them a couple of lucky ducks.

First, a couple noticed that two little Oregon City ducklings were struggling to follow their mother up a curb at Beavercreek Road and Oregon 213 around 9:30 a.m.

Then, the couple called 911 after they saw the less-than-sure-footed babies tumble into a storm drain.

And finally, Clackamas Fire District 1 firefighters were able to reach down and rescue the hapless waddlers.

Lt. Jed Wachlin, fire district spokesman, said the firefighters were well equipped for the task, using "the simple compassion and care located in every Clackamas tool box for the safe recovery of the two wandering ducks."

"The mother duck was watching everything," Wachlin said. "She was a little bit excited, probably wondering if we were going to take them -- or eat them. But once the babies were returned to her, she got them and ran."
