Blaze Tears Through Vacant Church in Detroit

The fire at the former First Unitarian Church was battled by firefighters for hours.

May 11--The cause of a fire that gutted a vacant church in Midtown Detroit remained under investigation late Saturday, according to city spokesman John Roach.

The fire at the former First Unitarian Church on Woodward Avenue north of downtown broke out at about 6:30 a.m. Saturday. Roach said firefighters remained on the scene until well into the afternoon, putting out hot spots.

Roach said arson investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.
