A 35-year-old Richmond Summit man told officials that he heard voices that told him to burn the building that he didn't like living in any longer.

May 17--A Richmond Summit resident is facing charges after he claims voices told him to burn down the Broad Street building on Thursday.

Firefighters were called to the fire in an apartment at the building at 744 Broad Street about 12:20 a.m.

Police located the tenant Deondre Rashaad Thomas, 35, on the street.

According to an incident report, Thomas told a deputy he didn't like living in the building anymore and that the voices in his head told him to burn the building down. He also said he wanted to kill everyone in the building because people break into his apartment and pour urine in his drinks and mouthwash.

Thomas said he set his garbage on fire with a lighter and then left the building, the report stated. He said he has been on medication for mental disorder for the past 20 years.

Thomas was charged with first-degree arson.
