May 17--DURHAM -- Fire heavily damaged six apartments Friday on East Cornwallis Road, displacing about 25 people, officials said. No injuries were reported.

Chief Dan Curia of the Durham Fire Department said the fire at the Spring Ridge complex at 1709 E. Cornwallis Road broke out in a 12-unit building. He said a fire wall prevented damage to other units.

About 45 firefighters responded to the blaze, which was under control by midafternoon, Curia said.

The Red Cross was providing emergency housing to the burned-out residents.

Curia said the fire started in a utility closet in the rear of the building. The cause was being investigated Friday evening.
