A man was shot this morning at a house fire in southwest Atlanta, a police spokeswoman said.

Firefighters and police responding to a fire in the 1500 block of South Gordon Street reported a man with a gun in a yard next door.

The man and a woman in the backyard were fighting, Atlanta police spokeswoman Officer Kim Jones said.

Officers tried to talk to them, she said.

"The male began walking toward the officers with what appeared to be a weapon," Jones said. "The male was given verbal commands to drop the weapon but refused. At some point shots were fired and the suspect was shot."

The man was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, but his condition is unknown. He has not been identified.

No police officers were injured. However, one firefighter was overcome by heat and was taken to Atlanta Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, Atlanta Fire Rescue Department spokeswoman Janet Ward said in an emailed statement.

It is unclear if charges will be filed in the incident, which remains under investigation.
