Fire Erupts After Vehicle Ignites Texas Gas Leak

Midland officials say a vehicle drove through the gas leak, igniting the fumes and causing a fire.

May 24--Midland firefighters extinguished a massive blaze Saturday afternoon after a large gas leak caught fire on Rankin Highway in south Midland, according to the city's public information officer.

Emergency personnel responded at about 1 p.m. Saturday at the 2800 block of Rankin Highway, where thick black smoke could be seen filling the sky and floating west as far as the Interstate 20 and Loop 250 intersection.

City PIO Sara Higgins said a work crew hit a gas line that later caught fire.

Higgins said no one was injured in the fire and investigators are working to determine what caused the fire.

She also said a vehicle drove through the gas leak, which provided the ignition source. But that vehicle was not involved in the blaze.
