New, Growing Calif. Wildfire Forces Evacuations

A 500-acre wildland fire in Mariposa County has destroyed two homes and forced the evacuation of dozens more as firefighters battle the growing blaze.

May 27--A 500-acre wildfire has forced the evacuation of several dozen homes in a rural part of Mariposa County.

The fire, burning a mixture of grass, brush and trees, started about 3:30 p.m. in the Hunters Valley area near Lake McClure.

Authorities ordered the evacuations of between 30 and 40 residences at about 7:30 p.m., said Kristie Mitchell, public information officer for the Mariposa County Sheriff's Office. No other homes are currently threatened.

The Hunters Fire, at zero containment Monday night, has destroyed two structures, believed to be uninhabitated. The cause is unknown.
