The Warrenton fire chief discovered the account was overdrawn.

WARRENTON -- A volunteer firefighter was charged Tuesday with stealing $6,170 from the Warrenton Fire Protection District's Explorer Scout account.

According to court records, Kerre Lynn McCormick, 41, of the first block of Whispering Pine Lane in Warrenton, admitted writing and signing checks to get cash to pay personal bills. McCormick was treasurer of the Explorer fund.

The investigation began when the fire chief, Michael Owenby, last month discovered that the fund's bank account was overdrawn.

Owenby said the account includes grants and donations but does not have any tax revenue.

Warrenton Police Chief Greg Houdyshell said McCormick at the time of the theft was employed as a paramedic with the Warren County Ambulance District but no longer works there.

Warren County Prosecutor Jennifer Bartlett said participants in the fire district's Explorer program help and learn about fire department operations. Bail in the case was set at $10,000.
