May 31--VALLEY SPRINGS -- The Calaveras County Sheriff's Office arrested a boy on suspicion of arson after he set two fires at Valley Springs Elementary School on Wednesday, authorities said.

Deputies patrolling the area noticed smoke and located a grass fire in a planter box near the historic Burson School House. Deputies spotted one boy trying to extinguish the fire by throwing dirt on top of it and another boy leaving the area, authorities said.

The second boy admitted to setting the grass fire and an earlier fire in the wood chips on the school playground, deputies said. He was arrested and taken to juvenile hall. His name was not released because he is a minor.
