Body Found After Detroit Apartment Fire

June 03--The body of man was discovered by fire officials in a burned apartment on Detroit's east side this morning.

Family members said they learned of the 61-year-old man's death on the news and came to the complex on Mound north of 7 Mile. Family member Charmaine Jones, who was on the scene, identified the man as Edward Jones.

He a retired Chrysler employee and veteran with one daughter and four grandchildren, family members said.

Police have not determined whether the death was a homicide, though homicide investigators were on the scene, Detroit Police spokesman Adam Madera said. The body suffered trauma, but it was unclear what caused the trauma, he said.

Police also do not know whether the fire was arson, Madera said.

The charred front the door of the man's apartment could be seen a few feet away in the grass and a screen door to the unit hung open.

Investigators continue to work the case.
