Firehouse Expo to Offer Different Classes

June 3, 2014
It's more than tactics and officer skills this year at Firehouse Expo.

Editor's Note -- In the coming weeks, we will be taking a look at the various training opportunities featured at Firehouse Expo July 15-19.

People who attend Firehouse Expo in Baltimore in July will have the opportunity to learn about more than operations, tactics and officer skills.

There are a number of classes that feature discussions on topics such as issues with solar energy, how to check out an odor of smoke report, social media, creating a fitness program and creating training opportunities from near miss reports.

Two Florida fire department officers will give firefighters some tips to follow when they get the smoke odor call.

Orlando Lt. Walter Lewis and Winter Park Division Chief Jimm Walsh will talk about how it's important to take the call seriously. In addition,  this program is designed to help firefighters determine the cause from a laundry-list of potential sources.

Retired Salisbury, Md. Fire Chief Jeff Simpson will take firefighters on a new challenge -- solar energy.

His plan is to educate the emergency service on the operation, dangers and mitigation techniques required when encountering emergencies that involve multiple solar energy construction configurations. This is a solid real-world class that prepares city and rural personnel on how to be effective when facing the dangers of working around electrically charged conditions.

Also at Firehouse Expo, we all hear about near misses. But, is anyone really taking the steps to make sure it doesn't happen again?

Crew attending a course led by Montgomery County, Md. Fire Capt. Jason Blake will learn how to compile drills.

The course presents officers and instructors ideas and proven programs used by a combination department to learn from past events.

He will use recent case studies to show crews how to build props to make training worth while.
