June 03--An El Paso Fire Department lieutenant was injured when he fell about 20 feet from an overpass at a traffic-accident scene early Monday on Loop 375 in the far East Side, officials said.

A crash occurred about 2:20 a.m. on the northbound lanes of Loop 375 near Montwood Drive. Police said that a Ford F250 veered into the emergency lane and hit a stopped Ford F150 and Nissan Maxima and two men and a woman fixing a flat tire on the F150.

A 33-year-old woman was critically injured with severe leg injuries, officials said. The two men fixing the flat, ages 33 and 30, were hospitalized in stable condition.

A 41-year-old man driving the F250 was treated for injuries and taken into custody, police said. Investigators suspect that alcohol was a factor in the crash.

While emergency crews were at the scene, a Fire Department lieutenant fell through an opening in the overpass. He had fractures to his face and was in stable condition in the intensive care unit at University Medical Center of El Paso, Fire Department officials said.

Names were not released.
