Deck Collapse Leaves Dozen Hurt in S.C.

PAWLEYS ISLAND — Multiple injuries are reported following a collapsed deck on Pawleys Island.

Midway Fire Rescue are on scene at the Sea View Inn on Myrtle Avenue where a deck collapsed about 6:30 p.m., authorities according to Doug Eggiman the agency’s chief.

Pawleys Island Police Chief Mike Fanning tweeted “We have had a major deck collapse at the Sea View Inn. Myrtle Ave. is closed until further notice.”

Eggiman said a porch on the beach side of the property collapsed. The deck is 10- to 12 feet off the ground. Eggiman said 12 people were taken to either Grand Strand Medical Center, Waccamaw Medical Center or Georgetown Memorial Hospital. Their conditions and the types of injuries they suffered were unclear as of about 8:30 p.m.

He said one of those patients was transported at the most severe triage level but that was later downgraded to a less severe status. Five of the victims refused treatment Eggiman said

Emergency workers from Georgetown County, Murrells Inlet Garden City and Horry County Fire agencies were called for mutual aid, according to Eggiman. A helicopter also was called to airlift victims, but Eggiman said no one was flown from the scene.

Exactly what caused the collapse also was unclear as of 8:45 p.m.

Authorities, however determined that the rest of the building is stable, and expected to reopen the road by 9 p.m
