June 09--A Florida woman stopped in the middle of heavy storms Saturday night on Interstate 95 in Glynn County and was able to resuscitate a baby after the car the child was riding in hydroplaned, causing a four-vehicle crash that involved a tractor trailer and forced state troopers to detour traffic off of the interstate.

Lavetta Dorsey, 26, of Augusta, and her 1-year-old baby Aiden Dorsey, were rushed via ambulance to Memorial Health University Medical Center's trauma unit in Savannah following the crash that occurred around 11 p.m. Saturday, said Cpl. Rodney Rozier of the Georgia State Patrol. Dorsey and her son could not be air lifted because of the heavy rain and lightning that pummelled the coast Saturday night, Rozier said.

He said a preliminary investigation into the crash indicates Lavetta Dorsey's Pontiac Grand Prix began hydroplaning on standing water as it was travelling in the middle lane of I-95 south around mile marker 32 and spun into another lane where it was struck by a tractor-trailer also traveling south. The car then spun into another lane and collided with a Toyota Camry and Nissan Versa that were also traveling south. Drivers of those cars and the tractor-trailer were treated locally at Southeast Georgia Health System, Rozier added.

Aiden Dorsey may not have ever made it to the hospital had it not been for Marie Bailes, a registered nurse from Interlachen, Fla. who Rozier said stopped after the crash and was able to make the child start breathing again using emergency rescue breathing methods.

Rozier said the crash was big enough to force southbound traffic off the interstate at exit 38 to allow emergency crews to work the scene at which four ambulances were required.

The rain was so heavy during the on-scene investigation that Rozier said the spray paint troopers use to mark areas on pavement would wash away as soon as it was applied.

Rozier said Sunday evening the condition of Lavetta and Aiden Dorsey was unclear. He was awaiting word on their condition from the hospital in Savannah.
