Valparaiso Chief David Nondorf praised firefighters' actions.

Indiana firefighters had to call for help after their apparatus caught fire along an Indiana highway Thursday morning.

The department had no previous trouble with the rig, Valparaiso Fire Chief David Nondorf told reporters.

The three firefighters donned SCBA and emptied the four extinguishers they were carrying, but it wasn't enough.

They couldn't get the engine compartment open because it's under the passenger cab, and the hydraulic system to open it was immediately damaged by the fire, The Post-Tribune reported.

“I want to give credit to the duty crew. They put on air packs and started removing the equipment (from the truck). That was extremely good thinking,” Nondorf saidl

Once a second engine arrived, the fire was extinguished within 15 minutes.
