June 13--FORT WORTH -- Firefighters are trying to determine what caused a fire that burned down an east Fort Worth church.

Firefighters were alerted to the fire in the 1600 block of Effie Street shortly before 5 a.m. today. When firefighters arrived, flames were shooting through the roof of the Greater Canaan Baptist Church, said Battalion Chief Richard Harrison.

As the fire spread and grew in intensity firefighters were pulled from the interior of the building and ordered to attack the blaze from outside, Harrison said. No one was injured in the blaze and the fire was under control by 5:45 a.m., he said.

Fire investigators were trying to determine what caused the fire, Harrison said. Damage to the building is estimated at more than $415,000, he said.
